The Resource Anchor Exercise

Self-confidence isn’t something we are born with, it’s something we learn, practice, and often need to reclaim. One of the most effective tools for intentionally rebuilding it comes from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

When we doubt ourselves, what happens internally is often a loop of language and images: a silent dialogue of 'I can’t,' 'I’m not ready,' or 'I’m not enough.' NLP helps us interrupt this pattern and create a new one: grounded in clarity, truth, and self-assurance.

Here is a simple NLP exercise I share with my clients to reconnect with your self-confidence:

  • Step 1- Recall a moment when you felt deeply confident: it could be big or small—standing up for yourself in a meeting, finishing a project, or simply feeling grounded in your body. Close your eyes and bring that memory vividly to mind.

  • Step 2- Engage your senses: what did you see around you? What did you hear? How did your body feel? Notice your posture, your breathing, your energy. Let yourself relive that moment fully.

  • Step 3- Anchor it: while holding that confident state, lightly press your thumb and forefinger together. Keep doing this as you feel the sensation of confidence intensify. This physical gesture becomes your anchor—a signal that your mind and body begin to associate with that confident feeling.

  • Step 4- Test your anchor: open your eyes, shake off the moment, and then repeat the gesture (thumb and forefinger). Notice how your body begins to recall that confident state. The more you practice, the stronger the connection becomes.

This is not about pretending to be confident, it’s about training your nervous system to remember that you already are.

Every time you feel uncertain before a presentation, a conversation, or a decision, you can use this simple technique to bring yourself back to a grounded, confident state.

Confidence is not noise or posture; it’s embodiment. It’s the quiet knowing that you can trust yourself to show up, again and again.

And that’s something you can RECLAIM: one breath, one anchor, one choice at a time.
